Description

In this image, you see a new landscape created by the 2018 Kilauea eruption.  This eerily quiet cone is the result of the infamous fissure 8 that pumped out thousands of gallons of molten hot lava per second. At this time the lava was very hot causing it to be very fluid and moving fast. When the volcanic eruption was taking place, it was unknown how long the lava flow would continue, it could be months or years….  We are thankful it was only months.  This image shows red remnants, that is the result of lava, rich in iron, oxidizing and causing abnormal levels of iron in the surrounding area.  This image was taken on October 9th, 2018, the volcano had been quiet for 2 months at this time.
