Description

During the 2018 Kilauea summit event, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park changed forever and so did Halema’uma’u crater.  Prior to this event, and for more than 10 years one could view the orange glow from Jagger museum nearly every evening.  As the eruption took place over a few months, Halema’uma’u crater experienced countless collapses within the crater.  These collapses quickly became massive and the crater grew much bigger and deeper.  This photo shows the 1,600 ft deep Halema’uma’u crater along with Kilauea Military Camp below the crater and Jaggar museum is to the right and Volcano Golf course at the bottom.  As you can see, the park buildings are dwarfed by the size of the newly enlarged crater.  Seeing the changes and size of everything from the air was absolutely breathtaking.
